St Mary’s Hastings Review

Sadly I wasn’t able to make it down to what sounded like a night to remember in Hastings last Friday. However luckily journalism student Cathryn Buckland was on hand to give you an insight into the events that unfolded on the St Mary’s stage with her review below.

Last Friday evening something exciting happened, Pull The Other One finally came to Hastings. The event usually takes place in Peckham, London, however the offer of having their show in the beautiful building that is St.Mary’s in the Castle was just too good to say no. St Mary’s is a magical building that fitted well with the dynamics of the show – the acoustics provided by the soundscaping of DJ Ratsmilk and cohort GoDiddley were great, and there was an energetic atmosphere.

Charmain Hughes opened the show, she came on stage in her vibrant red dress with matching hair and instantly had me laughing. The night played host to the oldest performing Jewish comedian, Sol Bernstien, the infamous Bob Slayer, the surreal comedy of Simon Munnery and Dr.Brown, description defies….  Mr. Munnery walked on to the stage wearing a tall hat that had bubbles pouring out of the top, it was a random entrance that made me want to see more. Dr. Brown got everyone a bit giggly, he stood in front of us nude trying to cover up his private parts with one hand… which unfortunately proved incredibly difficult.

Sol was more New York than a deli pastrami on rye, and all this was preceded by Martin Soan, bringing a little bit of the West End stage to Hastings with his outrageous interpretation of Mr. O’Flaherty O’Flaherty O’Flaherty O’Flaherty (O’Flaherty) and the entire riverdance ensemble.

The Pull The Other One team is going to be making Hastings a lot more fun again on Friday 11 November with headliner Stewart Lee, and monthly thereafter.
